About This Site

About These Reviews The purpose of the magazine reviews provided on Fantasy Magazine Review is to provide valuable neutral reviews to help the fantasy football player find the right magazine for their needs. Every single fantasy football magazine has its own unique value and special contribution to the game of fantasy football. Fantasy Brains values the unique content offered by each fantasy football magazine and we encourage users to purchase and utilize these magazines.

Content such as article titles and magazine cover images has been quoted from and attributed to these publications in order to give our subscribers a sense of the content contained in the magazine.  Other data is collected and reviewed as per the guidelines stated in the section below.

Our magazine reviews are a comprehensive and objective look at over 175 tangible criteria that we believe are important to our subscribers.  Each magazine is reviewed by two staff members and cross checked for accuracy.  Our criteria include grades based on predefined guidelines for each criteria.  A total score, and seven sub scores, is provided for each magazine.  These scores are based on a proprietary algorithm which incorporates all of our objective criteria, grades  and sub scores to produce a number that we believe will help use subscribers evaluate these magazines.  We also provide subscribers with a way to create their own scores by weighting their own needs, or to search for magazines that meet their own top priorities.

Fantasy Brains, LLC has advertised in three fantasy magazines this year based on our needs for branding and traffic that we believe cannot be obtained without such ads.  These advertising decisions were made long before these magazines were reviewed by our staff, and independent of our review process.  We paid normal list price for these ads and have not given any special treatment to these magazines in our neutral review process.

To date, Fantasy Brains LLC has not accepted advertsing from any magazine reviewed by our staff. If our advertising policy were to change in the future, advertising solicitations would be made on a neutral basis.
About This Data The player rankings data used by Fantasy Brains LLC and Fantasy Magazine Review is obtained from a number of unique sources. One such source is the collection of various fantasy football magazines that are available to the public at any major bookstore or newsstand. The data obtained from the various fantasy football magazines is not simply given away but augmented with other data sources and analysis. Other data sources we utilize include the Fantasy Braintrust advisory board, the Fantasy Brains staff members and all Fantasy Magazine Review users that submit player rankings to the site.

The player rankings data we obtain from the various fantasy football magazines is displayed and augmented in such a way so as to not identify the source. For example, it would not be possible to discern how any one magazine has ranked all of its players. Where magazine rankings are displayed, you will see that these rankings are presented in a range of low to high where each column could represent any number of different magazines rankings for that particular player. Individual magazines are not grouped with their respective rankings.

Fantasy Magazine Review provides an accuracy score for each magazine that has been reviewed in past years.  This accuracy score is determined utilizing a complex proprietary algorithm which incorporates accuracy at of four different size data sets in order to best meet the needs of different sized fantasy leagues.

Our site also provides users with the ability to create their own rankings, view rankings averages from other groups such as our subscribers and mathematically combine those rankings with the magazine rankings data in a way that meets the unique needs of the subscriber.
About These Scores Creating our player rankings accuracy data was an extremely challenging task. We spent countless hours developing different criteria and formulas to figure out how accurately a magazine ranked its players the previous year. In the end, we used many factors to derive a formula that we believe is most useful to the reader.

We utilize the player rankings from the player details section as opposed to a magazine's cheat sheets or expert consensus rankings. We do not compare overall rankings because without knowing the scoring system, it is nearly impossible to create a ranking based on one.

When looking at data, we first discussed whether we should factor in rank accuracy, fantasy points accuracy, or both. Fantasy points accuracy looks at how closely ranked a player was to his final position based on fantasy points at end of year. Points accuracy is based on how many of the fantasy points the rankings attained – no matter how accurate the ranking prediction was. We felt both were extremely important, and decided to combine these factors into one formula.

The scoring system was another debatable topic. We analyzed each magazine in depth and determined a universal scoring system for fantasy points.

Another big factor was the number of players and the types of leagues. Some questions needed to be answered. How many players should be taken into account? Should we factor in size of leagues? Should we factor in individual positions?

In the end, we developed formulas that factored in league size, pick categorization and on a position-by-position basis. We also broke them out into smaller scores and different categories so that users in all types of leagues can gain better information from our numbers.

One of the other key factors we took into account was the amount of games played. Since most fantasy leagues end their season by Week 16, we ignored last year’s Week 17 stats in our formulas. Most NFL teams bench their star players or play them sparingly, so we did not feel that Week 17 should be taken into account.

Though many other factors that were put into play, we wanted to give you a sense of what we went through in determining our formulas. We wanted a fair and appropriate way to determine which magazines most accurately predicted player rankings.

We are extremely satisfied with the result, and believe that our users will have an excellent sense of which magazines ranked their players most accurately.
